Borromeo String Quartet Award

The Borromeo String Quartet Award was established in 2004 to provide important performance opportunities for one exceptional composition for string quartet each year written by an Aaron Copland Award resident composer. The award is the result of a collaboration between Copland House and the Borromeo String Quartet (called "simply the best there is" by The Boston Globe). Annual selections will be made by the Borromeo Quartet for inclusion in the ensemble's tour programs in the U.S. and abroad, and at its home base at Boston's Jordan Hall.

Eligibility and Deadlines

Only recipients of the Aaron Copland Award composers’ residencies are eligible for the Borromeo String Quartet Award. Composers will be allowed to apply with only ONE composition of their choice per residency. The submitted work for string quartet does not have to have been written at Copland House.

2007 Award:
String Quartet No. 2 ("Dances for My Father") by DANIEL BREWBAKER

2006 Award:
String Quartet No. 2 ("Kwazi's Revenge") by BURTON GOLDSTEIN

2005 Award:
String Quartet by PIERRE JALBERT

Application

To be considered, eligible composers should submit the brief application form and one completed score by July 15. Composers are very strongly encouraged to include a recording of this work (compact disc only). MIDI realizations are acceptable, if live or studio recordings do not exist. Composers who have already sent a completed score (and recording), in compliance with their residency agreements, are not required to submit another copy; in this case, only the application needs to be submitted. No other supporting documents or supplementary material will be accepted or considered – the sole criterion will be the artistic quality of the submitted composition.
