Aaron Copland: A Self-Portrait
Created by Vivian Perlis, the pioneering oral historian and
collaborator with Aaron Copland on his memoirs, and Allan
Miller, the esteemed documentary filmmaker, this lively and
informative film is the most comprehensive overview available
on video of Copland's life and work. The film ranges
widely from Copland’s Brooklyn childhood and student
years in France in the 1920s through his emergence as a
leader of New York’s vibrant artistic life between the
wars to his elevation as the revered, much-honored symbol
around the world of American music. The film features
extensive on-camera appearances by Copland, as well as
insightful interviews with a virtual Who’s Who of 20th
Century American musical artists: Leonard Bernstein, Lukas
Foss, Ned Rorem, William Schuman, David Diamond, Michael
Tilson Thomas, and many others. Also included are many
archival clips, excerpts of Copland conducting and rehearsing
and Bernstein and Tilson Thomas performing, and rare footage
of Martha Graham dancing in Appalachian Spring and Agnes de
Mille dancing in Rodeo. Aaron Copland: A Self-Portrait richly
demonstrates the breadth of Copland’s activities, his
artistic significance, the high esteem in which he was held
by his colleagues, his devotion to nurturing young composers
and performers, and his quiet dignity and modesty as an
individual.
