Sylvia Goldstein Awards

Sylvia Goldstein Awards

T he Sylvia Goldstein Award was created in 2003 to help support the recording, performance, or publication of one outstanding work each year written at least in part at Copland House by an Aaron Copland Award resident composer. The award, which honors the longtime Boosey & Hawkes executive and her lifelong devotion to assisting composers, was created through a major bequest by Ms. Goldstein to the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, and is implemented and administered by Copland House. Annual selections will be made by a rotating panel of eminent musicians.

Eligibility and Deadlines

Only recipients of the Aaron Copland Award composers’ residencies are eligible for the Sylvia Goldstein Award. Compositions in any medium begun, worked on, completed, and/or orchestrated during Copland House residencies may be submitted. Composers will be allowed to apply with only ONE composition of their choice per residency, even if they may have worked on several while at Copland House.

Application

To be considered, eligible composers should submit the brief application form and one completed score by June 15. Composers are very strongly encouraged to include a recording of this work (compact disc only). MIDI realizations are acceptable, if live or studio recordings do not exist. Composers who have already sent a completed score (and recording), in compliance with their residency agreements, are not required to submit another copy; in this case, only the application needs to be submitted. No other supporting documents or supplementary material will be accepted or considered -- the sole criterion will be the artistic quality of the submitted composition.

Support

The precise type of support most beneficial and appropriate to the work chosen (either performance, recording, or publication) will be determined in consultation with the composer. Award funds will be paid directly to the performing, recording, or outside publishing entity. In many instances, this award will not cover the entire costs of performing, recording, or publishing the work, and may need to be supplemented by additional funds from other sources. This award is intended to stimulate interest in the selected work, and encourage its dissemination. Award funds will be held for the composer for up to five years from notification of the award.
